John Goto Award | Jury

Applications for the John Goto Prize are open until October 14th.

𝗣𝗿𝗲́𝗺𝗶𝗼 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝘁𝗼 is a tribute from the School of Media Arts and Design to John Glithero, John Goto in the world of photography, whose groundbreaking work has contributed to reshaping photography as a means of social commentary and cultural critique.

With an application period running until October 14th, submissions will be evaluated by a jury composed of Álvaro Barbosa, Gemma Marmalade, Fátima Lambert, Olívia Silva, Paulo Catrica, Paulo Vasques and Pedro Leão Neto.

MEET THE JURY

ÁLVARO BARBOSA | Researcher, Full-Professor of Communication and Media. University of Saint Joseph, Macau
Álvaro is a Full-Professor of Communication and Media and a Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Academic Affairs at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in Macau S.A.R. China. Prior to this position, he served for 6 Years as Dean of the Faculty of Creative Industries at USJ and 12 years at the School of Arts’s board of directors from the Portuguese Catholic University. He holds a Graduate Degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering by the University of Aveiro in Portugal, a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Digital Communication from the University Pompeu Fabra in Spain, and before moving to Asia in 2011 he concluded a Post-Doc in Computer Music and Acoustics at Stanford University in the USA. His academic focus is on fostering systematic creativity as an essential process applied to innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership by mentoring startups, supervising research projects, creating new programs, and teaching in multiple universities across Europe, United States, and China.

FÁTIMA LAMBERT | Researcher, Curator, Coordinating Professor in Aesthetics and Education. Higher School of Education (ESE/P.PORTO)
Fátima is a Coordinating Professor in Aesthetics and Education - School of Education / Polytechnic of Porto (2000); PhD in Modern and Contemporary Philosophy / Aesthetics (1998), Faculty of Philosophy of Braga / Portuguese Catholic University: Philosophical Foundations of Aesthetics in Almada Negreiros, after which she was an FCT Fellow: Project ‘Writing and Seeing’ (2000/2004).  She coordinates the thematic line: Culture, Arts and Education / InED - Centre for Research and Innovation in Education, of which she was director until 2017. She is a member of the coordinating board of the Porto Polytechnic Culture Centre. Director of the Cultural Heritage Management degree programme and the Heritage, Arts and Cultural Tourism master's programme - ESEP.PORTO. Member of the ATHENA, ELIA, ENCATC and SEyTA platforms; scientific/editorial committees of academic journals; member of AICA (Portugal). Independent curator, she favours programming (exhibitions and artist residencies) with Brazilian and Portuguese artists. Keynote Speaker at scientific and cultural events; author of several books, monographs and published texts in scientific journals. She attended classical, contemporary and jazz ballet classes for 20 years and was a member of the Pirmin Trecu Company (Porto).

GEMMA MARMALADE | Researcher, Artist, Photographer, Professor. University of Derby, UK.
Gemma is a British artist and academic in the transformative potential of creative performativity through subversive social contexts. Having studied Photography in the UK at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, Gemma completed her PhD in Fine Art at the Cambridge School of Art, examined by seminal performance artist, Nigel Rolfe. Gemma is a senior academic and leader in Photography at the University of Derby, UK, and Visiting Professor for the Creative Industries in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Gemma is also Co-Director of [cloud], an international arts organisation seeking to explore egalitarian and radical approaches to emancipating contemporary artist practices through collaboration. With extensive experience in Higher Education and research, inter- and trans-disciplinary practices, management, curatorship, and writing within the arts globally, Gemma is a powerhouse of cultural contribution and social change-making.

GRAHAM ELLARD | Researcher, Professor of Fine Art, Artist. University of the Arts, London
Graham Ellard is Professor of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, where he has taught for 25 years. As an artist he has collaborated with Stephen Johnstone since 1993. Their work, predominantly in 16mm film, often exhibited as installations alongside drawings and models, has been shown in galleries and museums internationally including Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tramway, Glasgow; MoMA, Sydney; Tate Liverpool; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Anthology Film Archives, New York; Image Forum, Tokyo; Tate Britain, London.

OLÍVIA SILVA | Researcher, Curator, Photographer, Coordinating Professor. Higher School of Media Arts and Design (ESMAD/P.PORTO)
Doctor (PhD) in Photography Fine Arts by University of Derby, United Kingdom, Master in Photographic Studies also by University of Derby and Philosophy Degree by University of Porto. Actually developing PostDoc in Photography in University of South Wales. School of Art and Design, United Kingdom, and PostDoc in Photography in University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Higher education Professor since 1992, developed teaching activitiy on ESMAE Music and Performing Arts School and, since 2016, teaches at ESMAD Media Arts and Design School. Atually in the position of Coordinator Professor at Polytechnic of Porto, teaches in the courses of Master in Cinema and Photography, ESMAD, and Doctoral Programme in Artistic Creation, University of Aveiro in association with Polytechnic of Porto and Polytechnic of Leiria. Since the beginning of the School was member of the Installation Comission and now President twice elected of ESMAD Media Arts and Design School.  

PAULO CATRICAResearcher, Curator, Photographer. New University of Lisbon
Paulo Catrica lives and works in Lisbon. He studied photography at Ar.Co., Lisbon (1985) and History at Univ. Lusíada, Lisbon (BA 1992), an MA in Image and Communication at Goldsmith's College, London (1997) and a PhD in Photography Studies at Univ. of Westminster, London (2011). He taught at Universidade Lusófona (2010-2014), ESMAE, Politécnico do Porto (2010-2014), ESAD, Caldas da Rainha (2010-2011), Atelier de Lisboa (2010-2016), FBAUL, Universidade de Lisboa (2016-2020) and Escola das Artes, Universidade Católica, Porto (since 2011).  He is currently a researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History of the New University of Lisbon (since 2014). He has exhibited regularly in public and private institutions since 1997. PAULO VASQUES | Councillor for Culture, Cultural Programme Maker. Vila do Conde Municipality
Paulo Vasques was born in Vila do Conde in 1980. He has a degree in History of Art from the Faculty of of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto. Cultural Programmer at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto between 2004 and 2021. Director of Circular - Associação Cultural and co-programmer of Circular Festival de Artes Performativas (Vila do Conde), between 2004 and 2021. Since 2021, he has been a councillor at Vila do Conde Town Hall, in charge of Culture and Tourism.

PEDRO LEÃO NETO | Researcher, Publisher, Assistant Professor. Faculty of Architecture, University of Porto (FAUP)
Pedro is a researcher and assistant professor at FAUP since 2007 in the area of Architecture Communication and Photography, being the coordinator of the research group Architecture, Art and Image (AAI), director of the cultural association Cityscopio and the founder and editorial coordinator of scopio Editions. Neto has curated several architectural photography exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, workshops and international debates and seminars around the universe of Architecture, Art and Image, being the author and editor of more than 40 books around these subjects. He is Editor-in-Chief of Sophia Journal, a peer review indexed journal with an International Conference that now has an open call focused on public housing across multiple geographies. Neto concluded a post-doctoral work “Contemporary View on Portuguese Architecture: Documentary Artistic Photography Mapping in FAUP” (2018) that integrated various contemporary photography projects focused on the work of Álvaro Siza and has been published in book and reedited in 2022 with a billing extended version. He has been coordinator and Principal Researcher (PR) of several national and international public funded research projects e.g., “Visual Spaces of Change” financed by the Portuguese public agency – FCT (2019-2023). Neto's research, deeply rooted in the synergy between pedagogical innovation and university extension activities, exemplifies a multidisciplinary approach that spans Architecture, Art, Design, and Photography. Two significant works showcase his endeavours, particularly in visual communication and pedagogy.
